EMDR & trauma
EMDR therapy for single-incident trauma, complex trauma and the patterns they leave behind. Weekly sessions or focused intensives.
Virtual psychotherapy · Ana Bulnes, MSW, LICSW (she/they)
Life can be a handful for all of us, and being different can make the path trickier than it needs to be. Being neurodivergent, queer, in non-monogamous relationships or carrying old trauma can add layers of complexity. There are ways through, and they work best when they're built around you.
Licensed in Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, Illinois, Washington, Vermont and Iowa. Sessions are online, and because licensing follows where you are, you'll need to be at an address in one of these states for every session. You'll share that address during intake, and I'll confirm where you are at the start of each session.
Who I work with
My clients often say they spent years in therapy explaining their basic reality before anything useful could happen. I start from understanding, so we can dig deeper and do the work.
EMDR therapy for single-incident trauma, complex trauma and the patterns they leave behind. Weekly sessions or focused intensives.
Neuroaffirming care for adults, including late-identified clients. Executive function, burnout, emotional regulation and rejection sensitivity, without trying to make you more "normal."
Self-discovery, showing up in the world as your genuine self, and the relationships and everyday choices that come with living authentically, at whatever pace feels right.
Clinical expertise in polyamory, open relationships and other non-monogamous structures. Opening a relationship, agreements and boundaries, autonomy and hierarchy, metamour dynamics, jealousy and compersion, using interventions built for how these relationships actually work.
Individual therapy
Most people start here. We meet by video on a regular schedule and work on whatever brought you in, using approaches that fit how your brain works. That might be EMDR, or talk-based work on burnout, relationships, identity or executive function.
You can see me as your only therapist, or alongside a therapist you already have. Some clients see me for focused autism or ADHD work while their primary therapist covers everything else. Others see me for weekly EMDR, including for complex trauma, and keep their primary therapist as their home base.
Many clients stay for six to nine months, and some longer. We'll check in along the way about what's helping and when you're ready to space sessions out or finish. Less frequent sessions also work well for check-ins, or for staying on track after more intensive work is done.
Couples & families
When one or both partners are autistic or have ADHD, standard couples advice often misses. Misread tone, different needs for processing time, and very different ways of showing care can look like a relationship problem when it's really a translation problem.
I'm listed in AANE's directory of providers trained to work with neurodiverse couples. Sessions are 80 minutes, which gives enough time to slow down and actually understand each other.
Focused trauma work
An intensive condenses EMDR into a longer block of time, so we can do deep processing without stopping every 50 minutes. It can be a good fit if weekly sessions keep getting interrupted by life, or if you're ready to work on something specific, such as:
Right now I offer intensives to clients who have an ongoing therapist. Your therapist stays your home base before and after, and I coordinate with them, with your permission.
EMDR can bring thoughts, memories and feelings that usually stay in the background into everyday awareness. That's part of how it works, and it also means timing matters. Intensives tend to go best when your life has some stability and predictability: enough sleep, enough energy to take care of yourself, and room in your schedule to rest afterward. A demanding season at work, ongoing burnout, or a stretch of poor sleep can make it harder to process well.
If now isn't the right time, that doesn't mean never. Many of my clients started with the goal of EMDR and spent time getting ready first, and that preparation is meaningful work in itself.
EMDR processing often keeps unfolding after an intensive, just more slowly. Some clients choose to stay on afterward for ongoing EMDR at whatever pace fits them, which can be especially helpful for complex trauma (CPTSD).
You'll need
The readiness assessment is paid whether or not we move ahead. If an intensive isn't right yet, I'll explain why, and we can talk about getting ready.
Intensives are paid in full when scheduled. Fees cover the full scheduled time, including breaks. Cancellations need at least 14 days' notice. You'll receive the full policy before booking.
Intensive fees are shared during your initial inquiry.
About me
I'm a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with more than twenty years of experience, EMDR-trained and a member of EMDRIA. I'm also autistic, nonbinary, Latinx and a person of color, so the neuroaffirming, difference-respecting approach here comes from lived experience, not a training module.
I see you as the expert on your own life. My job is to bring structure, curiosity and clinical skill, and to help you build insight you can actually use.
Fees & insurance
I don't bill insurance directly. Many clients with out-of-network benefits get part of each session fee back. There are two ways to do that:
How much you get back depends on your plan. Your payment to me doesn't depend on what your insurer pays.
For providers
I work alongside prescribers, evaluators and other therapists. With a signed release, I coordinate care and keep you updated on shared clients.
For adults with ADHD or autism who want therapy alongside medication management. I focus on executive function, emotional regulation, burnout and rejection sensitivity, and I'll keep you informed about what we're seeing.
A place to send clients after a new diagnosis, especially late-identified adults making sense of their history. I can build treatment around your recommendations.
Specialty support when a client's needs move into autism or ADHD, EMDR, neurodiverse couples work, or ENM. You can stay the primary therapist while I see your client for focused specialty work, such as autism-specific sessions, weekly EMDR including for complex trauma, or an EMDR intensive. Full referrals are welcome too.
Getting started
Pick an opening and answer a few short questions. For paid sessions, a card is required to hold the time.
I'll confirm the time or suggest another one.
You'll get a secure link to intake forms through the client portal.
Your first full session is a chance to talk through your history and decide together whether we're a good fit to keep working. Your card is charged after the session.
Not sure yet? The free call is a chance to meet me and ask questions about working together. We won't go into clinical history on the call.
If none of the available times work for you, for a free call or for ongoing sessions, email [email protected] and we'll find a time that does.
